Scalp
Radiating outward from a crown, which means the direction changes continuously and there is no single stroke that suits the whole head.
A scalp is a good deal larger than a face, and most of it is behind you where you cannot see it. That combination changes what matters: not closeness, which any of these systems will manage, but how long the appliance runs, how it sits in a hand held at an awkward angle, and whether you can work a surface you cannot see without leaving a strip behind.
Direction and anchorage
How the hair grows
Hair on a head radiates outward from one or more points near the crown, so the direction under the appliance is different at the front, at the sides and at the back, and it changes continuously in between. There is no grain to follow across a scalp in the way there is down a cheek. The skull itself is a compound curve with a ridge at the back and a flat panel at the sides, and unlike a jaw it offers no bone edge to work along. What replaces technique here is coverage: overlapping passes in more than one direction, done by feel, with the free hand checking behind you.

Systems that do not
A flat sheet on a skull touches along one edge and lifts along the other, and the correction people reach for is pressure applied to a surface they cannot see.
For a hairline at the front and the nape, yes. For the whole expanse between them, worked blind, an exposed straight edge is the wrong instrument entirely.
A narrow blade covering an area this size turns a ten-minute job into a long one, and none of these listings claims a scalp anyway.

Before anything is bought
Without buying anything
- Work out whether you can reach the back of your own head comfortably for as long as the job takes. That, rather than any specification, is what decides whether this is a self-service job at all.
- Use two mirrors, or a phone camera on a timer, to look at the back before you decide anything is finished. Almost every missed strip is at the crown or just above the nape.
- Try it with whatever you already own on a short setting first, so you find out how it feels to have no hair before you own an appliance dedicated to keeping it that way.
- Time yourself once with whatever you own. If the session runs longer than the running time a listing states, that specification has answered your question for you.
- Feel for the missed patches with a dry palm rather than looking for them. Skin tells you where the strip is faster than a mirror does.
Safety
- StopTwo things mean stopping rather than taking one more pass. Skin that is broken, raised, sore or already inflamed, which is a doctor’s call and not something to draw a blade across. And a line so far out of true that a shorter setting only chases it, which is a barber’s. Neither of them improves by carrying on.
