- Buy nothing yet. Run whatever is already in the drawer in small circles instead of straight lines for a week, because a fair share of complaints about rotary shavers are complaints about technique.
- Decide whether a head is part of this. Shaving a scalp is a long session with the appliance held at angles a face never asks for, and it is the single question that narrows this group fastest.
- Read what each listing states about running time, and treat silence as silence. Only one appliance here puts a figure on it.
- Check what the listing says about replacing the caps and cutters, since they wear as matched pairs and the pair is what you will be buying in two years.
- Leave the accessories out of the decision until the end. A brush and a massager in the box change nothing about how the heads meet a jaw.

- A second appliance bought because the first felt slow on a long beard. Take the length down first with a comb; the problem is the length, not the shaver.

- Replacement heads that the appliance’s own documentation does not name.

Category cautions
Nothing here is unusual as long as the heads stay matched and the appliance stays yours. The one about mains power is the one people break by accident, at a sink, in a hurry. All three below apply to every listing in this group.

And a line so far out of true that a shorter setting only chases it, which is a barber’s. Neither of them improves by carrying on.

- StopCharging happens away from the sink and the shower, with dry hands, and never while the appliance is still wet. A water rating describes an appliance in use, not an appliance connected to mains power.
