- Buy nothing yet. Tilt your head back at a mirror in daylight and settle whether this is a job at all. A surprising share of the appliances in this drawer were bought for a problem seen once, in a car mirror, in unusual light.
- Check the box of any all-in-one kit you already own. Several of them ship a nose attachment that has never been out of its pouch, and it is the same kind of guarded cutter sold here on its own.
- Decide how often you would use it. A hand-turned tool answers a monthly job; anything weekly is where a motor earns its place.
- Only then choose a power source, and choose it on how you live rather than on a feature list. A removable cell means a shop errand; a built-in cell means a cable and a socket.
- Read the water wording last, and read it as words. It changes how the appliance is cleaned and it changes nothing about how it cuts.

- Anything sold on how many attachments come in the box. One guarded cutter does this job; the rest of the pouch is for other jobs entirely.
- Scissors and tweezers marketed for the same purpose, which do not appear anywhere on this site as a way to do it.
- A listing that names a part of the face the appliance is plainly not shaped for, on the grounds that naming it commits the seller to nothing.
- Any appliance bought to deal with hair inside the ear canal, which is not a job for an appliance.
- A second one bought because the first was disappointing. The cap is the working part, and a cap that has been dropped on tile is the thing to replace, not the whole appliance.

This group has the shortest list of things it may be used for and the firmest boundary around them, and most of what follows is about where an appliance stops rather than what it does. All six below apply to every listing in this group.
